Victor Kunonga
Victor Kunonga and his band, “Peace,” are a Zimbabwean musical
phenomenon. A masterful story-teller and lyricist, his songs derive
from a profound sense of dignity and social awareness, confronting
issues of poverty, dispossession, and the rights of ordinary people.
Kunonga’s masterful guitar playing, subtle lyrics, and charismatic
stage presence have garnered a devoted following of fans at his Friday
night shows, held in Harare’s premier jazz venue, the Mannenberg.
Kunonga’s debut album, “Such is Life,” launched him as one of the most
exciting new talents in the music industry, receiving critical acclaim
and success in the local charts. His second release, “UYO,” has been
described as “a gem” (The Standard); “a fantastic piece” (Financial
Gazette) and “mind blowing” (The Herald). Kunonga’s
characteristically Zimbabwean afrobeat derives from many influences,
including strains of the legendary Thomas Mapfumo, Oliver Mtukudzi,
and Louis Mhlanga. However, it is the legacy of the great Zimbabwean
guitar bands of the 1980s that really shine through his music, such as
Devera Ngwena, Bhundu Boys, Four Brothers, Jonah Sithole and the Deep
Horizon.
Kunonga is a social activist, who strive to work toward social justice
and change thorugh his music. Since 2006, he has acted as the
Southern African Ambassador against Poverty, performing at Stand Up
Against Poverty concerts in Harare’s oldest township of Mbare, as well
as the huge satellite township of Chitungwiza. Kunonga has also
participated in campaigns on behalf of Action Aid, the UNDP,
Zimbabwe’s National Aids Council, and the organization Football
Against Aids in Zimbabwe.
Above all, Kunonga values the opportunity to compose and play his
music from a place ‘deep within,’ winning the hearts of all who hear it.
